All Day K

Last night the Duluth School Board gambled a million dollars to offer all day kindergarten. It was something previous school boards refused to do because there was no funding for it. The successful passage of an increased operation levy could have funded this but the most recent attempt failed. That meant a million dollars had to be found elsewhere in the existing budget.

Some of the funding is very temporary. Some comes from a one time $600,000 cash infusion from the Federal Government. If this is not renewed and if the State’s ed finance stays on hold it will be very interesting to see how the School Board will maintain all day K. If it has to be ended again in a year or two this gesture will have proven a colossal waste of resources.

Why did the School Board take this chance? I believe it was important to the Administration to demonstrate that the Red Plan is finally paying off. (Whether it is or not)

One can only wonder if Dr. Dixon will be there to share in the disappointment of his four Board loyalists should it be necessary to scrap all day K in the near future.
