Saving by laying off teachers

Among the more ridiculous savings reported be be part of the $5 million in annual savings with the Red Plan are the laying off of elementary specialists. This will supposedly save $400,000 a year.

When I was on the Board the parents and school board members fought to retain these teaching positions. We first hired the specialists after the 1997 levy. Now getting rid of them is considered savings.

Gary Glass has been requesting that the School District explain the financial basis of the claim that we will save $5 million annually for almost a month now. He’s being stonewalled. Nonetheless, the Red Plan supporters who are beginning to crawl out of the woodwork are all harping on the great savings to be made from rebuilding schools that are half the age of my home. Some people savings is other people’s waste.
